On June 28, 1991, Joey Gamache won the vacant WBA World Super-featherweight title in the 10th round against Jerry Nobobeni at the old Lewiston Raceway.  The following year, he defeated Chil-Sung Chun and won the vacant WBA lightweight title here in Portland. He's the only boxer from Maine to achieve a world boxing title. Gamache would go on to continue his career and win most of his fights but never achieving any further world championships.

He was badly injured in a fight on February 26th of 2000 against Arturo Gatti.  Gatti reportedly gained almost 20 pounds between the weigh-in and the fight, which is a 24 hour period. Gamache went on to sue Gatti and the New York State athletic commission. The judge acknowledged the negligence however wasn't convinced that had anything to do with the outcome. He never fought again. The Maine boxing legend has kept his feet in the sand and continues to work as a boxing trainer.

Here is the complete fight from this day in '91
