According to the Portland Press Herald, a Maine-based charter airline, Elite Airways, will formally announce plans to offer a direct flight from the Portland International Jetport to Melbourne International Airport in Florida. There are currently no airlines offering nonstop service from Portland to any parts of Florida.

Melbourne International Airport in Florida was chosen for it's "central" location to several of Florida's hotspots for vacationers looking to escape the cold conditions. Melbourne is just 40 minutes from Cape Canaveral, 20 minutes from Cocoa Beach and about an hour from the ever popular Orlando/Disney area of Florida.

The flights will also be small. Elite Airways doesn't operate any plane with a seating capacity larger than 70 and it's likely that the direct flight option between Portland and Melbourne will be one of Elite's smaller passenger planes with a capacity of 50 people.

The nonstop service is set to begin next month. For more information on Elite Airways fleet of planes as well as their extended service across the country, the Portland Press Herald offers more details here.
