Album Cover Fans… You Can’t Miss This Documentary in Portland on Tuesday

Quite simply, he is the greatest album cover designer of all time. The covers to some of the greatest records you own were dreamed and designed by Storm Thorgerson and his team called, Hypgnosis. If you're a Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Mars Volta, Peter Gabriel, Ween or Audioslave fan; this documentary at Space Gallery on Tuesday is a must see. 

I'm not anti technology or anything, but THIS is why we can't let physical music go away.

Yeah, yeah I know you love your Pad and Pod and Phone thingie. I do too! I use it for more of a convenience though. To have a million songs in a device the size of a pack of smokes is a nice thing. It's awesome if you want to make a playlist to cover a 4-hour party for a gathering of friends. I get that and I agree.

When I want to really enjoy music though; to block things out and focus on an album that I've purchased from someone who worked hard compiling their passions and ideas for me... it's not about ease of use. It's a bit about focus isn't it? Block out the other things and enjoy. To get true enjoyment I think it requires just a bit of focus. And there's nothing wrong with that, except today, getting people to focus on anything is a miracle. We are too all over the place every day.

As we move onward with the ease and better ways of technology; the accompaniments of art are basically trashed. Like the top of a can or package you rip off. Peel and toss, no thought about it. Yeah you've got the tunes, but that's not all that comes with it. An album cover and it's art complete an album. In many ways, they start your experience. Before you listen to a note, you see the cover image setting up your album's offering. No one set up things better than the late Storm Thorgerson and his team called, Hipgnosis. He is quite simply the greatest album art designer of all time. And YES you have records and cd's in your collection with his art on it. I can't think how lucky we are that his time was before modern times.

Celebrate this amazing genius and his music artwork Tuesday Nov 3rd @ Space Gallery in Portland with, TAKEN BY STORM: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, a documentary about the man who created THE album covers you'll never forget. Covers that were as big as the music, sometimes bigger. Album artwork that makes realize our music experience today is under-served thanks to technology.
