Maine has been plagued this summer by a series of rabid animal attacks, and the hits just keep on coming.

This weekend, the Bangor Daily News reported a story of a dog owner in Searsmont defending their family and puppy from a rabid raccoon. After the animal attacked the family dog, the owner and her boyfriend sent it to the big trashcan in the sky.

After the raccoon emerged from the woods and started to attack the 8-month-old puppy, Diane Sturgeon and her boyfriend kicked the animal to stop the attack, and then killed it with a shovel.

The puppy was up to date on its shots, and is expected to be fine after a visit to the vet.

This attack comes after several high-profile rabid attacks in recent weeks, including an otter in the Midcoast that attacked a family on the beach, and a raccoon in Brunswick that tangled with a 95-year-old WWII vet and lost.

Stay safe out there!
