Damon Albarn has been full of tricks and surprises lately -- from showing up in a bar to sing a Blur song with a local band to reuniting the artists on Gorillaz's 'Clint Eastwood' onstage. Last night, he pulled off another one.

During his show at Royale Boston last night, Albarn told the audience, “If it doesn’t go well, I promise you, I’ll never do it again.” And then he launched into Blur's eternal 'Song 2.' You can watch the fan-captured video of the song above.

It was the first time that Albarn had ever played the song onstage as a solo artist. The 1997 track was Blur's biggest hit on the Billboard pop chart back in the day.

While the song sounds great and all -- and it's great to see Albarn rocking out some since his new solo album, 'Everyday Robots,' is kind of laid-back -- the best part is the singer's head. Well, specifically, the elephant hat he's wearing on top of it.

He was sporting it for his performance of 'Mr. Tembo,' a song about an elephant found on his new album. Here's video of that song:

And here's Albarn and a bunch of the original Gorillaz crew performing the classic 'Clint Eastwood' onstage together for the first time at SXSW earlier this year:
