Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters Were Supposed to Perform at the Emmys

TMZ intercepted Dave Grohl on the way to his car, and we learned two things: First, when Grohl isn't seated in his extravagant throne while on tour, he’s rocking a pretty sweet cane. Second, Foo Fighters were apparently slotted to play last night’s (Sept. 20) Emmys but the Fox awards show reportedly canceled on the band.

Grohl's HBO series, Sonic Highways, earned two Creative Arts Emmys a week earlier, but when asked why he wasn’t attending Sunday’s ceremony, Grohl revealed the band was actually slated to play a song from their 2014 full-length of the same name. “We were supposed to play the Emmys, and we were gonna pay on the Emmys, and then they kicked us off,” Grohl told TMZ.

When Rolling Stone reached out for further comment, Foo Fighters offered this statement:

The band and the Academy were extremely happy and excited to have Foo Fighters play as the first ever rock band on the Emmys. Fox then refused to allow the band to play a full song from the Emmy-winning 'Sonic Highways.' That is why the band decided not to perform.

Grohl doesn’t appear to hold any animosity toward the Emmys, though. When TMZ asked if he’d be willing to perform next year’s ceremony, Grohl replied, “I’ll do anything.”

Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways took home two of its four Creative Arts Emmys nominations for Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming.
