According to CNN, one of America's oddest (and silliest) traditions, Phil, the famous groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania did not see his shadow today. Superstition suggests that Americans can now rejoice as an early spring will be upon us.

The legendary ceremony took place this morning at Gobbler's Knob, where the president of the "inner circle" carefully tapped on Punxsutawny Phil's door three times before Phil emerged at 7:20 a.m. He then made his announcement in his special language, "groundhogese" to the president. From there, on lookers celebrated that winter will end early.

Groundhog day began back in 1887, and was quickly adopted by the United States as one of its annual traditions. The 1993 movie starring Bill Murray titled "Groundhog Day" brought additional attention to the system in which the Punxsutawny Phil predicts a longer or shorter winter.
