Somebody Pulled the Plug on Jack White Last Night

Jack White played Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham last night. In a way, it was a warm-up for his gig at the Glastonbury festival this weekend.

After the main portion of his set — which included the usual mix of solo songs, White Stripes tracks, cuts by some of his other bands and cover or two — he returned for some encores.

He began playing ‘Goodnight, Irene,’ the Lead Belly classic that’s been covered by pretty much every folk artist over the past 70 years, when, about three minutes into the song, the plug was pulled. Seems that White and his band were past the venue’s curfew.

But that didn’t stop them from finishing the song. As you’ll see in the above video, they kept playing for another three minutes, unplugged and encouraging the audience to sign along — just like an old-fashioned hootenanny. So in a way, and whether or not he intended it, roots purist White brought the classic song back to its stripped-down origins. Bravo!

White also covered the Stooges classic ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ and performed a couple songs with the Kills‘ Alison Mosshart, who happens to do double time in one of White’s side projects, the Dead Weather. You can watch those clips below.
