Although January isn’t traditionally designated for major new music releases, there is nonetheless plenty arriving at the start of 2017 for fans of alternative and indie rock.

Coming on New Years Day is the latest from the very prolific producer and composer Brian Eno. Reflection is a 54-minute ambient album consisting solely of the title track. Eno wrote the title comes from the fact that “it makes me think back. It makes me think things over. It seems to create a psychological space that encourages internal conversation.”

Later that week, Boston Irish punks the Dropkick Murphys will deliver their next album, but it’s the next week that two of the biggest records of the month will come out. On Jan. 13, Wayne Coyne’s birthday, the Flaming Lips are putting out Oczy Mlody, which is Polish for “Eyes of the Young.” They’ve already given us a few previews of the record. That same day, hip-hop supergroup Run the Jewels are releasing their third record. Nirvana are giving a vinyl reissue to their 1992 rarities collection Incesticide, and ska legends Madness and indie trio the xx round out the week.

Emo veterans AFI lead the way on Jan. 20, and the next week sees new projects from a pair of acclaimed indie bands, Japandroids and Cloud Nothings. Finally, former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson has revived the name Bash & Pop, under which he released 1993’s underrated Friday Night Is Killing Me, for a new record.
