After three years on the sidelines, Jimmy Eat World are back. They've put out a new song, "Get Right," and it comes from an album that will be out on Oct. 21. It will be the first new release from them since 2013's Damage.

Details on the record are forthcoming, but you can check out the lyric video for "Get Right" above. They premiered the song on the BBC's Radio 1 Rock Show, after which they spoke with frontman Jim Adkins about the making of the new work, which was recorded in Los Angeles between last November and this April with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Neon Trees, M83). Adkins described how the time spent holed up affected the recording.

"There was some stuff that was in the 'fully formed' category," he said, "but most of it was sort-of put together in a more spontaneous, more breathing kind of environment. It especially feels a long time coming because we didn't do anything with the band for a solid year."

In the interim, Adkins spent last year working on a solo project that saw him release six songs -- three of which were covers -- over the span of a month-and-a-half and embark on a solo tour. He said that the time away gave him a better perspective in dealing with the interpersonal dynamics of being in a rock band.

"I think it just helped us get in touch with things as people," he continued, "and by that I mean I think I'm in a place where I'm willing to throw away default responses to problems in life, and I'm willing to check my ego and [think], 'What's the best way to approach this?' [and] 'What's the best way to solve this particular issue or problem?'"

Next month, Jimmy Eat World will play six dates in Europe before spending the second half of the month playing festivals in North America, including Chicago's Riot Fest (Sept. 16) and the Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas (Sept. 25).
