John Mayer has big plans for new music in 2017 — and he started off the new year with a low-key live performance that featured Dave Chappelle joining him for a cover of Nirvana's "Come as You Are."

The cover, which found Mayer and Chappelle leading the audience through a singalong, was captured through fan-shot footage, which you can check out below. Chappelle joined Mayer during his secret show at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles on Jan. 3; for more photos and video from the evening, scroll through Instagram user @nightengale68's feed.

Mayer's return to the solo stage serves as a prelude to the release of his new album The Search for Everything, which was recently preceded with its leadoff single, "Love on the Weekend." His first solo studio LP since 2013's Paradise Valley, Mayer's new record will be coming out in monthly installments starting Jan. 20.

"The album will be released four songs at a time. Every month. There were too many songs to ever get out the door at once," Mayer explained in a Facebook post announcing the album's first "wave," which includes the tracks "Moving On and Getting Over," "Changing," and "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" in addition to the previously released "Love on the Weekend" single. "I love you and I thank you for waiting. Here we go."
