Nine Inch Nails fans have their first taste of the new Not the Actual Events EP via the set's first single, "Burning Bright (Field on Fire)."

The song, which you can check out above, comes just days before the EP's Dec. 23 arrival, which NIN mastermind Trent Reznor announced last week. Describing it as "an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record," Reznor seemed to suggest he'd set out to put together a different sort of musical statement, but his muse had other ideas — as he put it, "it’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story."

Atticus Ross, who's collaborated with Reznor on multiple soundtrack projects (including the Oscar-winning The Social Network and Grammy-winning The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), is now listed as a full NIN band member — and in addition to new music, the pair have been busy excavating Reznor's vaults to collect bonus material for a vinyl reissue campaign.

The NIN albums Broken, The Downward Spiral, and The Fragile are all set to arrive next spring, with the latter LP expanded into a quadruple-disc edition that packs on nearly 40 extra tracks — including instrumental versions of the original album that Reznor says result in "a truly changed experience that [works] on a different yet compelling level."

Not the Actual Events, which is set to make its official debut today (Dec. 22) on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 Radio via Apple Music, is available to pre-order nowfulfilling a promise Reznor made to fans in late 2015.
