Styxx owner, Josh Moody, will close the doors on the well-known Portland gay bar due to expensive operating costs. The basement level watering hole will shut down permanently in January. The owner has no plans to open another bar in the space at this time.

The bar, once known as The Underground, has a long history of being a welcoming space for dancing and occasional live entertainment.

The bar website says, "Styxx Nightclub is a premiere dance club in downtown Portland Maine featuring excellent DJ's, drink specials, special events, lounge area, dance floors, backroom caged stage. Come have a great time in this inviting, anyone is welcome environment."

In a story by WMTW, the owner explained that his patrons now feel comfortable "socializing in the dozens of bars and nightclubs around Portland that cater to all crowds."
