Greater Portland area residents and visitors who need a cab will now have a new ride sharing service that they can pay for with a special app courtesy of a San Francisco based company, according to WMTW.

The Portland television news station reported Friday that Uber drivers will take passengers from Freeport to Alfred, Portland to Cornish and rates start at $1.75 per ride and increase 23 cents per minute and $2 per mile. Customers don't need any cash for fares or tips. Instead, they pay for their rides via the Uber phone app. Uber is offering five free rides to customers as a gift.

WMTW also reported that Portland area taxi drivers are not happy about the new service because licensed taxi drivers in Portland charge a city rate. Currently, UberX is not subject to those regulations, which is an issue the Portland City Council may address.
