On this day back in '94, R.E.M. released a new album. An album that would end up being loved and hated by fans and critics. It was a totally different sound for the band. It was the follow-up to their hugely successful "Automatic For The People" album. Monster was a noisy album filled with loud, distorted guitar. It still had the harmony's though and even a beautiful noisy ballads like "Strange Currencies".

"What's The Frequency Kenneth" was the first and most successful single from the album. How successful was it? It would become the first song to ever debut at #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks. Click here for the strange story behind the song inspired by the one and only Dan Rather.
