The Governor has signed the proclamation certifying the results of last November's general election referendum question concerning the legalization of recreational marijuana in Maine.

Matt Dunlap, the Maine Secretary of State, tweeted that he received the signed proclamation on December 31, meaning that the law will take effect on January 30th.

Maine's new law will allow for the "cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, testing and selling" of marijuana and marijuana products.

Individual Maine cities and towns can still pass local ordinances prohibiting the use of the drug.
