You may have heard last week following a tequila-themed birthday party at Bowdoin College, students and other members of the administration are up in arms after students represented sombreros.

The issue at hand is some students found the sombreros offensive, while others are on the other side of the argument saying some students are being too sensitive. Two members of the student government, in result, are now facing impeachment. This appears to be driven by previous racism problems on campus.

A group of students recently cited that Joshua Chamberlain (former Bowdoin President, and highly respected leader of the 20th Maine regiment responsible for holding the flank at the Battle of Little Round Top and saving the Union in the Civil War) was known for wearing his sombrero into battle. They have made t-shirts in effort to "support the sombrero."
