On the banks of the Kennebec River lies a quintessential Maine lighthouse accessible only by boat or foot.

You've undoubtedly seen pictures of some of Maine's most notable and largest lighthouses. They've graced the covers of magazines, been the focal attraction of postcards and even been featured in television commercials. But as the saying goes, "it's the little things", this small lighthouse on the banks of the Kennebec River just feels like home.

Located in Arrowsic is the Squirrel Point lighthouse. It dates back to 1895 when it was used as a navigational aid to sailors approaching the coastline from the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to the lighthouse, there's a keeper's house and a boathouse on the property. The United States Coast Guard owns the property currently, but it's available for respectful visitation. The property is run by a non-profit group that maintains and preserves it.

There's just one problem for those who love to park close. There is no parking. There's also no road. You'll need to put on your hiking boots in order to visit Squirrel Point on foot. Find a small parking lot at the end of Bald Head road and the follow a trail to the the spectacular lighthouse after a 10-15 minute hike.
