As the Thanksgiving holiday arrives this year, people will be hitting the road to spend some time with family and friends. One thing we can all agree on is that nobody wants to be stuck in traffic on their way to a holiday vacation. Unfortunately for those traveling, this year's Thanksgiving traffic could be the worst in more than a decade. The remedy? Avoid the roads as much as you can during their peak. Here's a little help from i95ExitGuide.

WORST TIMES TO HIT THE ROAD

A lot of us have to work which means hitting the road on Thanksgiving Eve (Wednesday). But the absolute worst time to leave is between 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday. Most of Maine's highways will be the busiest during this time, and you're likely to encounter significant delays.

On your way home, do your best to avoid Saturday and Sunday returns between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Between the holiday traffic, plus those continuing their post Black Friday shopping, traffic could be significant.

BEST TIMES TO HIT THE ROAD

There's a sneaky good time to hit the road on your Thanksgiving travels. It's Thanksgiving Day! i95ExitGuide suggests leaving as early as possible, but you are likely to find significantly less traffic than Thanksgiving eve. Although, you'll have a lot less time to spend with your grandparents.

Better set your alarm for the best time to return from your Thanksgiving feast. Depart 6 a.m. on Black Friday is the best time to be out the door to avoid shopping and return traffic. If you have to leave over the weekend, choose Saturday before 11 a.m.

You can stay informed on the latest traffic details by following the Maine Turnpike on Facebook and Twitter.
