For those residents of Portland, Westbrook and other surrounding communities tired of battling through the mall area to get to the closest Walmart, some good news is coming your way. According to KeepMEcurrent.com, Walmart is set to anchor a brand new shopping plaza planned for Westbrook at the Pike Industries gravel pit.

The shopping center, called Dirigo Plaza, is still in the planning stages but hopes to be a 500,000 square foot destination with multiple shops available to customers. That will now include a massive 155,000 square foot Walmart, which will include groceries as well as a pharmacy. The project will be located between Main street and Larrabee Road in Westbrook.

Rumors had been swirling for weeks that the proposed shopping center would be anchored by Maine's first CostCo store. While the sprawling plaza could still house a CostCo, it's unlikely to happen next to a similar store like Walmart. Additional businesses that will occupy the plaza will be announced in the coming months.

There is currently no timetable for when Walmart or the additional stores as part of Dirigo Plaza would open.
