Tonight at Geno's WCYY Spinout Presents Turbo Fruits on their first visit ever to Maine. They're kinda stoked bigtime. They like shellfish and dirty rock clubs.

If you listen to Spinout, you know one of my favorite bands over the past 10+ years of doing the show was Be Your Own Pet from Nashville. When they started they were like 17-19yrs old. A killer house party/garage rock band I thought could have saved the world. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth took to them fast and put them out on his record label. If you missed out on those cats, take a quick taste.

Sick right? So damn good. Well, Jonas Stein was the guitarist of BYOP. Around the time of their ending days, he fired up his new band, Turbo Fruits. They started off as a trio (eventually a 4 piece) and quickly released one record after another over the next few years building up a good rep and collecting some decent reviews and support.

The band's 4th album, No Control just came out a month ago with production by Pat Carney (Black Keys). If you mesh up modern southern garage rock indie (Jeff the Brotherhood, Pujol, Deer Tick, Black Lips) with even a slight taste of new wave at times, you have the Turbo Fruits.

Jonas said he'd never been to Maine before and I was like, "dude, really? That's a bunch of bulls---. Let's change that!". He agreed. I really have to pat these guys on the back. They're trying to do this music thing and they see the love from someone in radio who believes in them AND who plays them. They've heard how cool Portland is, they know about our record store who actually carries their music... so they it only makes sense to play here while we're up in this neck of the woods (New England). It was a no brainer to Jonas and we connected and made it happen. Thats pretty cool. Most bands (well, their managers, labels and idiotic booking agents) are so focused on big markets they forget how you break out in this industry. You work it! More than ever, you must work it.

Thanks to Kaitlyn, J.R. and Genos too for helping to bring the band to town. This band playing there makes so much sense. It stinks of a Genos gig even before the first note is played. Local friends Meantone and Mouth Washington are gonna open it up and start the party.

Come out if you can. 21+ only $6
