A pair of sneakers recently showed up strung over a power line on Spring Street in Portland. It's a common occurrence all across the US, but who does it and why?

According to Snopes.com, there are a lot of theories as to why this happens, one of the most common being gangs marking the boundaries of their territories. This is Portland, Maine though, so that seems unlikely.

Other common theories are bullies stealing them off kids to taunt them, graduating seniors leaving something behind and, the most likely reason for this pair of shoes, someone doing it just for fun.

It seems there's no real reason for tossing a pair of sneakers up on power line. It probably just comes down doing it because you can, if you have the skill.
