The El Rayo Taqueria restaurant that has been a mainstay in downtown Portland is undergoing some big changes that will include a new location elsewhere in the city and a second new Mexican restaurant in nearby Scarborough.

Located at 245 Main St., construction crews were hard at work getting the new restaurant ready to open in the next few weeks. It situated directly across Route One from the Scarborough Fire Department.

According to El Rayo Taqueria's web site, the restaurant owner noted, "You may have heard the Cantina has closed, making way for exciting redevelopment by our landlord. The Taqueria on the corner of York and High will remain in its current location for the foreseeable future while we look for a new, larger Portland location!

"Meanwhile,we are hard at work on our 2nd El Rayo Taqueria in Scarborough on Route 1 near Oak Hill. You'll recognize the El Rayo attitude: fun, unpretentious, and fresh and fans of the Cantina will be excited to see our full bar (and the occasional appearance of the famous Burger)!"
