13 More Deaths, 702 New Coronavirus Cases in Maine New Year's Eve

According to the Maine CDC on Thursday, New Year's Eve, there were 702 new cases of people with COVID-19 in the state as well as 13 coronavirus-related deaths.

That places the cumulative number of COVID cases in Maine at 24,201 and the state's death toll at 347.

Over 1,000 people have had to be hospitalized at some point.

Androscoggin County now has the highest case rate, while Piscataquis County has the lowest.

Governor Janet Mills announced a new executive order December 11 requiring Mainers to wear face coverings in all indoor public spaces and prohibits owners from letting anyone in who is not wearing a face covering. The order also states that claiming a medical exemption is not an excuse to enter without a face covering.

Mills also has extended the State of Emergency in Maine through January 20, allowing Maine to continue to receive federal funding and use available resources to respond to COVID-19.

Additionally, the governor has extended the curfew for certain businesses until further notice. Places like movie theaters, casinos, restaurants, bars and tasting rooms are to close by 9 p.m. There is no end date for this order.
