Can you walk through drive-throughs in New England?

Great question, right?

Now before you think to yourself, "I would never, I am always in a car," etc...think about this.

There are many walkable towns in New England: Portsmouth, Ogunquit, Kittery, Dover, Keene, Newburyport, the list goes on and on. I find myself walking with my wife frequently, often on weekends, and wanting a morning coffee on my route. Last weekend, after a walk, my wife wanted her favorite iced chai latte from Aroma Joes. I noticed this sign...

Clearly, this sign indicates an ability to take walk-ups, just not after dark.

I LOVE this idea, and think all drive-throughs should have the same concept.

Not everyone has a car. Not everyone who has a car likes to drive it. And more importantly, people who commute by foot or bicycle should be able to get a coffee via a drive-through, just like cars.

Simply put, I do not see the big deal.

Walkers will NOT slow down a drive-through. You can walk 15 feet just as fast as you can crawl through a drive-through in your car.

In a search for an answer, per usual, I could not find clarity. The short answer is, it is up to the business and/or the location.

For example, this was put out by Mcdonald's in 2018:

Generally speaking, for safety reasons we cannot serve pedestrians and vehicles at the same outdoor service point. Vehicles need to pull up close to drive-thru service points to complete their orders and there are no pavements or safe areas for pedestrians to stand at these same points. It could also contravene the trading license or, in some cases, present a security risk.

However, at some restaurants, where the layout permits, we have installed a small number of separate pedestrian walk-up windows that are open outside of core restaurant hours (for those restaurants that operate a 24-hour drive thru)

What are your thoughts?

I think drive-throughs should take commuters because...WHY THE HECK NOT?

McDonald's identifies a potential safety issue; however, I think that is a cop-out. I think that every road in America has pedestrians and vehicles that manage just fine.

Do you think drive-through businesses should take walk-up customers, too?
