Blue Rooster in Portland, Maine, Closes Permanently as Amigo’s Eyes Expansion
Once upon a time, Portland's Old Port was bristling with people, along with plenty of late-night food options to feed the hungry crowds. But if you haven't visited the Old Port recently, things have certainly changed. There's still some late-night crowds, but nothing like what Portland saw through the '90s and '00s. With lessened crowds, the late-night food options are sparse. One popular late-night food option is no more, as the Blue Rooster Food Company has permanently closed.
The Blue Rooster served up tons and tons of tater tots to ravenous late-nighters in search of one more meal before bedtime. Prior to the pandemic, lines outside Blue Rooster from midnight on were commonplace. The late-night ferocity has never quite returned, and the end of Blue Rooster seemed to be coming for awhile now. It doesn't appear that space will stay vacant long.
Rumors through Reddit have been swirling that the Blue Rooster's neighbor, Amigo's, has plans to take over the space. Several years ago. Amigo's had plans for expansion, hoping to build a second story onto their existing outdoor patio area. That plan never came to fruition due to several hurdles, but it would make sense that Amigo's could expand wider versus up.
Amigo's is currently closed for winter break to give their employees some much needed rest and relaxation. There's been no announcement about an expansion or any details on what that could include. An acquisition of the Blue Rooster space would make a lot of sense for Amigo's for a potential expansion of their kitchen and outdoor space. Stay tuned.
