Candlebox’s Kevin Martin Leads ‘Free Fallin” Jam Tribute to Tom Petty
The death of Tom Petty continues to reverberate through the music industry, and during an appearance at the Sunset Jam night at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, Candlebox's Kevin Martin broke from the night's theme of saluting AC/DC long enough to work up a Tom Petty salute with his fellow guest musicians.
"This one's for you brother. We miss you," said Martin at the start of the performance, imploring the crowd throughout the song to sing along. Joining Martin during the performance were Tommy Black of Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts on bass, Robin Diaz of Candlebox on drums, Puddle of Mudd's Matt Fuller on lead guitar and Erik Himel of Mumiy Troll on rhythm guitar.
Martin wrote of Petty's death, "God dammit, f--king heartbroken, you will be missed you brilliant star, thank you for all you gave musically, #love #peace #rip."
Martin's Viper Room performance is one of what sure will be many live tributes to Petty in the coming weeks. The legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician died Monday (Oct. 2) in Los Angeles at the age of 66.
Meanwhile, Martin is enjoying a small break before resuming touring with Candlebox in support of their Disappearing in Airports disc Oct. 20 at the Pensacola Interstate Fair in Florida. Stay tuned for more dates coming here.
