New England’s Favorite Gas Station Snubbed by its Home State

According to FreeBets.com, it should come as no surprise that Cumberland Farms, or "Cumbies", has been crowned New England's favorite gas station in almost every state—except for Vermont and, ironically, its birthplace of Rhode Island. Favorite gas station in those states? Kum & Go.

Until today, with "Cumberland" in its name, I had always just assumed that it originated in Souther Maine, Cumberland County in particular. I also thought that it was only a New England based chain but apparently I was wrong on both as they actually have locations throughout the country.

According to Wikipedia, the chain’s roots actually trace back to a one-cow farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Originally a dairy farm, Cumberland Farms grew into one of the largest in southern New England. Wikipedia also states that by 1962, they revolutionized roadside convenience with New England’s first-ever convenience store.

Here's a fun fact for ya, in the late 1960s, Cumberland Farms ran a successful ad campaign featuring jingles penned by the one and only Brad Delp. Name not ring a bell? I bet you've heard his music. He would later be a co-founder and the singer for the iconic rock band Boston.

Sadly, I wasn't able to find any of the actual jingles that were written by him, although maybe this was one of them, later used in 1986?

Wikipedia also says that in 1992, Cumby's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Yet, like any great New England underdog story, the company rebounded and now operates over 566 locations across states like New York and Florida​.
