As promised, Dave Grohl played a special performance at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 28) and it was definitely for an important purpose: the Foo Fighters frontman played a somber acoustic rendition of the Beatles' 'Blackbird' for the 'In Memoriam' tribute to actors and filmmakers who died during the past year. The tribute featured a nod to the late David Bowie, including his incredible cameo in Zoolander.

It wasn't the first time Grohl has played this rendition of the Beatles classic: He's performed it in concert before and there's a demo version out there, too.

Grohl said before the show, during a red carpet interview with Chris Connelly, that he decided to accept the offer to perform because his daughter would think he's a "wimp" if he'd turned it down.
