Family Dollar in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Closing Permanently
It wasn't that long ago that Family Dollar looked like one of the great retail success stories in America. The chain had exploded across America, finding success in smaller towns and cities looking for discounted department stores with smaller footprints.
But in 2024, Family Dollar went from thriving to unraveling. It was announced the chain would close as many as 700 stores across the nation in attempt to right itself financially.
Over the last 24 months, 10 Family Dollar stores in Maine have already closed.
And another one is on the way.
Family Dollar to Close Their Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Store Permanently
In July of this year, the Family Dollar brand was sold to a private equity group. That group planned to take a close look at the performance for all of the remaining 53 locations in Maine for Family Dollar as well as the lease agreements in place to determine whether stores should remain open.
It appears the end is near for the store in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Sale signs have popped up inside the store declaring that the store will be closing permanently.
Their final operating day will be November 15.
Other Family Dollar Stores in Maine Could Be Headed For The Same Fate
The Family Dollar closure in Old Orchard Beach may be the first domino to fall around the state for the discount chain.
When the chain began moving into Maine, lengthy lease deals were signed in many locations. Several of those lease lease will expire over the next year or two, meaning more Family Dollar closures could be coming.
