Customers have counted on Fresh Approach as a place to get high-quality meats, grab something from their deli or to pick up a few items for their pantry.

Unfortunately, that's coming to an end.

In a social media post, Fresh Approach Meat Market announced it would be closing for good.

Fresh Approach explained the two determining factors in their decision to close. Fresh Approach had been nabbed in a government sting that levied a hefty fine and a suspension of the stores's food stamp license.

The second factor was Fresh Approach and their wholesale business. It had seen a downtown over the last year because several restaurants in and around Portland, Maine, closed.

Between those two massive challenges, the financial strain was too much to overcome. Fresh Approach will stay open until their store is fully liquidated.

The Government Sting on Fresh Approach in Portland, Maine

As people make peace with the loss of another friendly neighborhood market in Portland, Maine, one of the key factors in its closing remains odd.

USDA officials conducted a sting operation in 2024 after they had been tipped off that Fresh Approach may be non-food items and accepting food stamps as payment.

According to The Bollard, a sting revealed two instances of that happening where an employee of the store sold an agent dish washing liquid and paper towels.

Fresh Approach was fined nearly $6,000 for their first offense and eventually had their food stamp license suspended on a paperwork snafu. The small market never recovered financially from the suspension.
