Here’s Why One of Maine’s Major Airports is Temporarily Closed
Despite how rural Maine is, due to our geographic location, we have several international airports.
Houlton International Airport (yes, it is a thing) and Portland International Jetport, for example.
Probably the most well-known of Maine's international airports is Bangor International Airport.
In addition to being served by several major carriers, it is a common emergency landing spot for transatlantic flights that encounter mechanical issues or in-flight emergencies. Bangor International Airport is also often used as a refueling point for private jets coming from across the Atlantic. In December 2023, Taylor Swift's plane made a brief stop at Bangor International Airport in order refuel.
You may have heard that the airport was recently closed to flights. It appears that this will be happening several more times over the next few weeks.
Why Is Bangor International Airport Closed?
Last year, we got word that BIA was going to be closed to flights several times this spring. A recent article in the Bangor Daily News provided a breakdown of when the work was going to be done.
According to the Bangor International Airport website, there will be a 55-hour-long closure each week through the middle of June. These closures will start at 8 a.m. on Mondays and end at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The only exception to this is that there will be no closure during the week that begins with May 26th, as that is Memorial Day Monday.
You can learn more about the project from the BIA website.
While Bangor International Airport is one of the state's busiest, it is not the only busy airport in Maine. Other busy airports include the Portland International Jetport and the Augusta State Airport. Check out our list of the busiest airports in Maine.
