January 1st, 2012 was a big day for many Mainers.

That was the day that, after being banned for six decades, fireworks were once again legal for the average Maine citizen to possess and use.  Yes, we have been able to drive to New Hampshire to buy fireworks for decades, but it is not the same.

There’s just something magical about being in Maine and knowing you can light up the night sky with your own fireworks.  Not every state lets you do it, but here in Maine, we celebrate loud, bright, and proud.

Even though, statewide, fireworks are legal in Maine, there are still dozens of towns and cities where fireworks are either banned or restricted. These include Augusta, Waterville, Bath, and Belfast.  You can check out a list HERE.

Even in places where they are completely legal, there are some types of fireworks that you are not allowed to possess or use.

What Types of Fireworks Are Forbidden in Maine?

According to a posting on the website for the Office of the State Fire Marshal, there are a series of fireworks that are forbidden to have nationwide.  These fireworks have been banned federally.  These include M-80s, Cherry Bombs, firecrackers with more than 50 milligrams of powder, large shells, aerial bombs, and mail order kits for making fireworks.

The website also explains that commercial grade and display fireworks are also illegal for the average Mainer to have or use.

You can read all of the details HERE

Of course, fireworks companies are allowed, in most cases, to use the above fireworks because they have the necessary licenses.

Maybe you'd be better off just checking out one of the many great fireworks displays that will be happening in Maine over the 4th of July weekend.
