The FBI is Investigating Threats Allegedly Made Against Maine University
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a man from Cornish, Maine is facing several charges after he allegedly made threats against the University of New England.
The press release explains that, on Monday (September 15th), members of the Maine State Police and Biddeford Police looked into a report of concerning comments made by a man at a restaurant in Cornish. The comments suggested possible threats against the University of New England in Biddeford.
Troopers identified the man as 24-year-old Blake Tibbetts of Cornish. He was detained, evaluated at a hospital, and later taken to the York County Jail.
At the request of State Police, the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office and the FBI joined the investigation. During the search, investigators found bomb-making materials at Tibbetts’ home on Old Limington Road in Cornish.
The Fire Marshal’s Office has charged Tibbetts with several crimes including terrorizing, criminal use of explosives, and criminal attempt to cause a catastrophe. He is being held on half a million dollars cash bail.
*NOTE - All suspects are considered innocent until being found guilty in a court of law
Because of the charges and evidence recovered, the Fire Marshal’s Office is now the lead agency. They are working with Maine State Police, the FBI, and the York County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the University of New England community.
The case is still under investigation and no further details are being shared right now.
