Over the last few months, we have seen the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) make significant cuts in government funding.

Headed by entrepreneur Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency's goal is to eliminate wasteful government spending.  In some cases, this has been done through funding cuts.  In other cases, procedural changes have been made in order to maximize government efficiency.

Given the significant cuts to many organizations, it should not come as a surprise that some government entities have been forced to layoff workers.

One of the latest is the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to an article in the KJ, an $11 billion cut to state and local health agencies nationwide has forced the organization to cut many workers in Maine.  A significant portion of these cuts were made in the form of the cancellation of $91 million in contracts with outside businesses.

The article explains that 40 contract employees are in the process of being laid off as a result of the recent cuts.  They are not Maine CDC employees, instead, they are people employed by companies contracted through the organization.

The affected workers fill various roles in the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  For example, the article contains a comment from a worker who investigates disease outbreaks at long-term care facilities, like nursing homes.  While COVID-19 is still on the minds of many, these outbreak investigators investigate many different types of outbreaks.
