For many families, the real kickoff to summer in Maine is the 4th of July.

Sure, the official start to summer is somewhere around June 21st, the kids are generally out of school by the second or third week of June, and we generally have at least a few scorching hot days by the middle of June, but it does not feel like summer until we have had a chance to celebrate our nation's birthday.

Even though our state's many Independence Day celebrations are always a good time, this year's is going to be even better.

Why?

Because this year, the 4th of July is on a Friday.  That means the majority of us will be able to do the holiday in a major way and sleep in on Saturday, July 6th.

Are you unsure of where to see the best fireworks displays in your area?  We want to help with that!

We've put together a list of the best places to see Independence Day fireworks in Maine this year.

One of the cool things about fireworks displays in Maine is how many of them happen over the water.  For example, in Bangor they are shot off over the Penobscot River.  In Bar Harbor, they are fired off over Frenchmans Bay.

You have got to check out this video of fireworks viewed from a sailboat off the coast of Camden.

Cool, eh?
