More Than 33,000 Maine Students & Teachers Affected By Data Breach
As the online footprint of each of us continues to grow, it should come as no surprise that we are seeing data breaches with increasing regularity.
A few decades ago, most people only had a couple of online accounts. These days, we all have dozens. We've got email accounts, social media accounts, streaming service accounts, and online medical records, to name just a few.
Each of those databases, from our streaming accounts to our bank records, is at risk of being hacked. Successful hacks often lead to our personal information being sold to scammers on the dark web.
Recently, a data breach at Power School exposed the personal information of millions of students and teachers from across the United States.
The PowerSchool Data Breach
According to an article on the WGME website, over 33,000 Maine students and teachers had their personal information leaked.
While the investigation is in the early stages, the WGME article explains that schools in Cumberland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Kennebunk, and Lewiston have already reported that someone gained access to the files of tens of thousands of students and stuff.
As the investigation progresses, it is likely that the number of people affected will increase.
Information stolen in the breach includes names, birthdates, addresses, social security numbers, and personal medical information.
