Even though most people would agree that winters in Maine can be beautiful, most would also agree that they can be incredibly dangerous, too.

The ice storm of 1998 and the recent 'Grinch' storm are two examples of this.  Each of those storms took the lives of several people and did millions of dollars in damage to the state.

Given the amount of snow, ice, and high winds we get during the course of a normal winter, it should not be a surprise that Maine is one of the states most at risk for winter power outages.

Maine is at Serious Risk for Winter Blackouts & Power Outages

According to a recent article on the Utilities Now website, Maine is the 2nd most vulnerable state when it comes to winter blackouts.

The article explains that, in the last five years, Maine has been hit with at least a dozen widespread power outages.  When the time of those dozen disruptions was added up, it totaled 78.5 hours.  Yes, in the last five winters, the State of Maine has spent over three days in the dark!

What State is at Most Risk For a Winter Power Outage?

If Maine was the 2nd most vulnerable state, which state was the most vulnerable to winter power outages?

Texas!

Of course, the winter power outages in the Lone Star State were not caused by snow and ice.  Nope!  In Texas, the winter power outages were caused by overtaxing the power grid during cold snaps.

For example, in February 2021, the state was hit by a surprise snowstorm and freezing temperatures.  People cranked up the heat in their homes, many of which were not properly insulated for such cold temperatures, and the taxed power grid failed.  Following this disastrous incident, the state changed how the grid operates.
