When it comes to New England I feel like our diverse array of good food joints offsets our often crappy weather, am I right? And when it comes to great places and dishes to enjoy in New England, we are rich with a vast number of cultural choices.

Channeling my inner Garfield, one of the best homemade, and comfort food, dishes is, of course, lasagna. But before we get into the best places around New England to score this classic dish, let us first dive into the history of lasagna, shall we?

According to Britannica,  lasagna has a history that spans centuries, rooted in both culinary tradition and adaptation. I just learned this morning that the word "lasagna" derives from the Greek lasanon, meaning "chamber pot," which the Romans later adapted to lasanum, referring to a cooking pot. Over time, the term came to describe the dish itself rather than the item used to contain it.

Back in the day, the original versions of lasagna appeared in ancient Rome, where sheets of pasta were layered with sauces and fillings, though these were far simpler than the variations of lasagna that we eat today. By the Middle Ages, lasagna evolved in Italy, especially in Naples and Bologna (insert Oscar Meyer jingle here), with regional variations that use lots of local ingredients.

So where in New England can you snag the best of the best lasagna dishes? Well, for that information, we turn to one of our favorite food publications, LoveFood.Com. According to their recent list of 'best lasagna by state', the best joint to snag a piece in Massachusetts is at Trattoria II Panino in Boston.

LoveFood goes on to say that 'Mom’s Lasagna della Casa from Trattoria Il Panino is legendary. It’s a huge portion with many layers, made with beef and ricotta, and served on a plate of addictive, creamy tomato sauce.'

Moving a little further north to the Granite State and we will find Patty B's Italian Restaurant in Dover. This, according to LoveFood, is the number one spot to snag a lasagna in New Hampshire.

'Patty B’s is the go-to spot for great Italian cooking in Dover. Its meat-filled 'brick' lasagna impresses customers and is made totally from scratch, including the pasta and marinara.'

Moving even further north to Vacationland, LoveFood puts Maine on the map with the best Lasagna in the Pine Tree State being found at Isa in Portland.

'For something lighter, check out the eggplant lasagna from Isa. Fresh and flavorful, it features house-made pasta, ricotta, and tarragon. The restaurant, a little off the beaten path, is small, cozy, and friendly.'
