Sure, the weather sucks 6 months out of every year, but it's a small price to pay for the overall benefit of living in such a safe state like Maine.

While Maine does have many deaths each year from things like crashes, homicide and other 'non-natural' causes, when compared to national averages and other New England states, Maine always comes in at or near the top of every 'safest state' list.

However, we are a state with millions of acres of woodland and forests. This means (obviously) that we are home to many species of animals both large and small. But, how many of those animals could be classified as 'deadly'? Well, quite a few, believe it or not.

Do we really have animals that can kill us here?

When it comes to animals in Maine that can 'kill' you, the list is pretty long, though oftentimes it's things like a subsequent infection from a bite that can cause your untimely demise. Let's take a look at the top three animals most likely to end it all for you in Maine.

The number one most deadly animal in Maine is..... the MOOSE!

According to World Atlas, the moose is Maine's most deadly animal for a couple of different reasons. First of all, how many times have you seen a video on social media of someone trying to get close to a massive moose in the wild? How does that typically end? Yeah, with the moose charging at the person and trying to delete them from the gene pool.

Secondly, moose tend to be all brown and dark-colored and have eyes that do NOT reflect light. This means that when your car's headlights hit one standing in the road, it's often hard to tell. And, as you might imagine, the survivability of a car crash with a moose depends on many factors.

Not sweet and precious puppy dogs!?

Now, to be fair, the article didn't specifically say that golden retriever puppies, like the ones pictured above, are likely to kill you. However, World Atlas does say that Maine is home to its fair share of dog bites. And while most dog bites don't prove to be fatal, following infections can.

The website discusses bacterial diseases from dog bites such as bacterial meningitis, cellulitis and even rabies. They also mention that some of the dog breeds prone to biting include pit bulls, German shepherds and Rottweilers.

Oh deer!

Coming in at number 3 on the World Atlas list is..... DEER.

If you've spent more than :48 seconds in the Pine Tree State then you have most certainly encountered a whitetail deer. They are literally everywhere. So much so that we have a freakin' island named after them for Pete's sake.

And while deer aren't venomous or poisonous, they can physically attack you if they're feeling threatened. They are also insanely stupid when it comes to how oncoming traffic works and will leap out in front of you in the dark of night causing crashes, sometimes fatal.
