There is a looming deadline right around the corner and if you have plans to travel, you'll need to add something to your wallet.

According to WGME, starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID, passport, or federal ID to board a domestic flight or enter federal buildings.

If you do not have one, you could find yourself stuck at the airport or turned away from certain federal buildings.

Why the Push for REAL ID in Maine?

Okay guys, so according to the article, this all started after 9/11, when the terrorists used over 30 fake IDs to carry out their plans.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says the REAL ID is designed to make it harder for anyone with bad intentions to board a plane.

TSA has suggested pushing the Real ID deadline to 2027. If this happens, people without a Real ID might face airport screening delays after May 7 but won’t be denied boarding, as per the report.

What you’ll need to bring get the REAL ID

Okay, so don't wait until the last minute because in order to get your REAL ID, you'll need to be prepared.

Head to your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and bring your passport or birth certificate. You'll have to carry in two pieces of mail to prove your address and this has to be done in person. Unfortunately, there are no online shortcuts.

According to WGME, Shenna Bellows, Maine's Secretary of State is telling everyone to do it now saying in the article,  "You don't want to be prevented from going on that dream vacation, or on that crucial business trip, or to visit a loved one in a time of need because you don't have the proper documentation"

Waiting to long could mean being caught up in packed BMV offices as the deadline gets closer, and that is not going to be a fun Wednesday. You know how it is at the BMV!

What’s the Cost?

According to WGME, a REAL ID driver’s license costs more then a regular license. The cost is $55, compared to $30 for a regular one.

Even though the price is higher, in my opinion, it may be worth it because I don't think we all want to carry our birth certificates or passports around with us.
