Frostbite Can Happen in as Little as 15 Minutes in Maine

30-below wind chills are extremely dangerous for anyone who's spending time outside. Even something as simple as shoveling your driveway or clearing your car could be hazardous if you're not careful. According to the National Weather Service, it takes just 15 minutes of exposure to the elements in 30 below-zero wind chills for frostbite to develop. Cover as much skin as possible when outside, to avoid frostbite, and limit the time you're out in the elements. Warm gloves, hats, and scarves are a must.

Warming Centers Are Open Across Maine, Giving Mainers Respite from the Cold

The Maine Emergency Management Agency reports that warming centers are open across the state to help people who may not otherwise be able to get out of the cold. Everyone is welcome, including anyone experiencing a power outage or furnace issues. The agency's website has a list of warming centers. If you don't see one close to your home, call the town office or local law enforcement agency to ask for one closer., call 211 for a list of resources in your area.

Stay safe and warm, and check on your elderly and shut-in friends, neighbors, and relatives. If you're concerned about someone and stop by their house, it's a good idea to step inside to ensure they have heat, instead of taking their word for it.
