What do Dropkick Murphys want for dinner when they play their hometown of Boston on St. Patrick’s Day?

Nope, not corned beef and cabbage. Not bangers and mash. Not even shepherd’s pie.

They want South Shore Bar Pizza – but from the SouthCoast. They want pizza from The Dipper Cafe in New Bedford.

“Last night our friends in the Dropkick Murphys played their St. Paddy’s Day show in Boston (it’s also their 30-year anniversary) and we were stoked that they wanted us to bring up a bunch of our bar pies to their show catering,” The Dipper posted on social media on March 18.

The special delivery was brought to the House of Blues Boston, where the band performed on March 17 as part of their St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Celebration. The group also performed March 13, 14 and 15 at MGM Music Hall at Fenway as part of their 30th anniversary festivities.

How The Dipper Cafe Landed the Catering Gig

Dipper Cafe co-owner Josh Gagne told WBSM how it all came together.

“We’re friends with the guys and they asked us to bring up some pizzas to supply the catering for their last St. Paddy’s show,” he said. “My business partner Ryan (Packer) used to work for them as road crew in the late ‘90s, and I’ve known Al (Barr) and the drummer Matt (Kelly) since the late ‘80s. We were all part of the Boston hardcore/punk scene.”

Who Are the Dropkick Murphys?

Described as “an Irish American Celtic punk band,” Dropkick Murphys first came together in 1996 in Quincy, Massachusetts. The band was named after Dr. John “Dropkick” Murphy, a former professional wrestler who later opened up a sanitarium in Acton, Massachusetts that served as a rehab facility for alcoholics in 1941.

The band’s biggest song is the ubiquitous “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” which can be heard at any Boston sporting event, in the film The Departed, and in Sam Adams beer commercials. They also recorded a version of “Tessie” that served as an unofficial anthem for the 2004 World Series Champion Red Sox.

What Is South Shore Bar Pizza?

South Shore Bar Pizza is a style of pizza that features a thin, cracker-like crust, a sweeter sauce, and a cheese blend that is more cheddar than mozzarella.

There is vigorous debate online as to which spot has the best South Shore Bar Pizza (and anyone who says anything other than Lynwood Cafe in Randolph, Massachusetts is wrong), but The Dipper Cafe has universally become a crowd favorite among SSBP fans.

The Best of South Shore Bar Pizza

There's pizza, and then there's South Shore Bar Pizza. Birthed in Brockton (and to this writer, perfected in Randolph – Lynwood Café is the true G.O.A.T.), it must meet certain qualifications to be considered "SSBP," which include: it's a 10-inch pie; it has a thin, cracker-like crust with minimal "flop;" the cheese is a blend that features more cheddar than mozzarella; and bonus points if you take it home between two carboard-type plates wrapped in flat brown paper bag. They also usually come with "laced" or "burnt" edges (terminology depends on where you are ordering), which is when the sauce and cheese are extended all the way to the edge of the pan, creating a crispy, flavorful coating to the crust. We reached out to the hugely popular South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club Facebook group to ask the experts to share the best of the best (in no particular order).
