Normally, I'm a storehouse of absolutely useless facts.

I can usually rattle off a ton of bullcrap that is not really relevant to anyone. I almost see it as a skill. I'm a total gem at parties. But one place I kind of lack, is facts about Maine. Sure, I know most of the basics. Like, who invented earmuffs and how Maine became a state. But these seemingly "basic" facts could be a mystery to other people.

But I came across this thread on Reddit, and I was completely hooked. I wanted to know all the things. As I read through the comments, I was also side-Googling half of what I was reading because it just seemed impossible. But truly, Maine has a lot of wildly interesting things about it that I certainly never learned in school.

Did you know America's first black lawyer passed the bar here in Maine? But hilariously, couldn't do it as a Mainer because he was black. So he applied as a non-resident and was accepted. Go figure. Maine is the only state with one syllable. We're the only state that borders one state, being New Hampshire.

There's literally a treasure trove of cool facts I'd never heard of. Now, I'm not claiming these are all true, 100%. This is Reddit. People do fact check themselves and others, but it's not like this is Encyclopedia Britannica. Feel free to check out anything you read. Also feel free to correct it.

But really, it's just really neat to look at some things about Maine that aren't the everyday stuff. We all know that Maine's the blueberry capital of the world. But you may learn some new things that you've never heard before. And that's what it's all about. Sharing information. Besides, if there's one thing I've learned about my fellow Mainers over my lifetime, we all love to know more reasons why we're so awesome.
