Checking for Charity in Maine Was Born Out of a Love of Hockey
Checking for Charity was born out of a love for hockey and a desire to give back to Maine.
In 2017, two South Portland firefighters hatched an idea for a charity hockey event with a couple of games and a focus on South Portland. Through the support and hard work of many firefighters and community members, the event has grown and raised nearly $150,000 in its first seven years! The event is on Sunday, March 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.!

These dedicated firefighters have not stopped raising money for the community they love, and they are wicked excited to bring back this popular tradition! They work hard every year to provide a day of fun entertainment with an amazing silent auction. That's how I got to see the Savannah Bananas! I was happy to pay for a great experience and it goes to such a good cause.
This year's benefactor for Checking for Charity in Maine is the Center for Grieving Children
The event is the largest fundraiser the South Portland Professional Firefighters conduct each year. All of the money raised is donated to a variety of non-profit organizations and charities, including Cans for a Cure! This year's focus charity is the Center for Grieving Children.
