Lewiston’s Old Police Station Will Become A Community Food Hub
The former building that housed the Lewiston Police Department is going to be put to good use and repurposed into a food hub.
Where Did the Police Department Move To?
The former location of the Lewiston Police Department had outgrown the space. They needed a new place to go and found a home at the Bates Mill Complex.
The Police Department is now in Storehouse #7, a four-story, 48,000-square-foot building at the Bates Mill Complex. The building was originally constructed in 1880 and was used as a textile factory.
After some lengthy renovations, the Police Department moved in during the month of April 2025. Now they have the space that they have waited for too long.
The Former Lewiston Police Department
The former Lewiston Police Department was located at 171 Park Street. Since the move in April 2025, the building has been demolished, but the site is going to be redeveloped into a food hub.
The City of Lewiston made a purchase and sale agreement for the lot for $2000.
What is a Food Hub?
According to Wikipedia, a food hub is "a centrally located facility with a business management structure facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally produced food products."
In addition, food hubs give farmers access to larger or additional markets. Food hubs also fill gaps in food systems infrastructure, such as transportation, product storage, and product processing.
According to WMTW 8, L-A Community Market has shown renderings of what the 20,000-square-foot supermarket and cafe will look like. It will be run as a co-op, independently owned and operated by its members.
They're hoping for a completion date sometime in 2027.
