Watch 5 Commercials From Businesses That No Longer Exist in Maine

Maine businesses come and go. It's a cycle that has been going on for over a century. We all have memories of those businesses that used to be here in Maine, but for whatever reason, closed down or moved out of state.

B&M Baked Beans is one of the most recent to move their production out of the state of Maine, and honestly, the beans haven't tasted the same since.

There is one way you can go back in time to memories of Maine when you were younger.

We've done some digging and found five commercials for Maine businesses in the '80s and '90s, thanks to the YouTube Channel @oldcommercialsUSA. How many of these commercials and businesses do you remember?

Brown Pontiac

Brown Pontiac was a car dealership on the Saco Auto Mile, named after the stretch of road on Route 1 in Saco with a dozen car dealerships. GM dropped the Pontiac brand in 2010, likely contributing to the dealership's closure. Today the building is the home of Whited Peterbilt of Maine. Here's a Brown Pontiac commercial from 1988.

Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty potato chips were made in Maine starting in 1947 on Route 1 in Scarborough, and sold dozens of flavors of chips. In 2006, they were bought by Old Dutch Foods out of Minnesota and the Scarborough plant was closed, with production moving out of the state. This commercial is from 1985, when Humpty Dumpty was still made in Maine.

Levinsky's

Levinsky's was opened in Portland in 1919, and has been family-owned ever since. The Portland store was closed in 2016, and owner Eric Levinsky moved to Windham. This commercial is from 1992 when there were four stores in Windham, Freeport, Brewer, and Portland. Today only Windham remains.

LaVerdiere's Drug Stores

LaVerdiere's was a Maine-based pharmacy like nothing you would see today. They not only filled prescriptions, but they also had toys, games, Halloween and Christmas decorations, and a video arcade in many stores. That's where I would always hang out when my mom was filling her prescription. It's the first place I ever played Pac-Man. They were bought by Rite Aid in 1994, which was then gobbled up by Walgreens in 2015. This commercial is from the holidays in the 1980s.

Cablevision

Cablevision was a cable TV company that served parts of Maine, including the Lewiston/Auburn area, through a good part of the '90s before Time Warner Cable and later Spectrum took over a majority of Maine's cable and internet service. The internet was in its infancy when this commercial was made in 1992. If you wanted to get on the internet, you had to dial into it with your phone, and it was mostly just text.
