This has always been an interesting concept to me during hunting season in Maine. Game/trail cameras used for hunting are such a big part of the culture, and I've watched many of my friends use them from an app on their phone.

The one question I always find myself asking as an "outsider" to hunting is, can you just place these cameras anywhere you want to in the woods or on property that's unmarked?

Firstly, the obvious is obvious here, right? No trespassing.

However, when you're in the woods or on a trail behind somebody's property, is it okay to plant your camera on a random tree then?

According to maine.gov, the short answer is no you can't unless you ask for written permission first.

Basically, find the house or property owner of the trail you intend to plant your trail camera on and have them sign over consent to do so.

Here's what they've stated:

" Game cameras require written permission from the landowner before being placed, and must be labeled with the owner's name and contact information".

Without getting too far into hunting politics and semantics, I just wanted to answer the simple question of whether or not it is legal to put a hunting camera on just any old tree.

I'll leave the rest of the hunting rules and Q&A you might have to maine.gov's website right here.

I know this can be a touchy subject, so I'll let you do your own dirty diving for answers to your own questions on this topic.
