Vegan Mainer’s Love of Tofu Deemed Too Vulgar for License Plate
Oh, how the pendulum swings...
Remember when Maine took a backseat with what you could put on license plates and let pretty much anything go?
Well, it was only a matter of time before that was stopped.
Maine this year has recalled 274 plates it deemed inappropriate, and that includes Pete Starostecki's plate LUVTOFU. This story even made it to the Associated Press!
Pete is fighting back, but Maine is holding firm and all appeals have been rejected - including Pete's.
I'm sure you see why, but I bet you also see that this is just plain silly. Could this family be more wholesome looking?
Maine said that he could show his commitment to the vegan life with a bumper sticker instead. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said that drivers do have the freedom to express themselves, but it should be on a bumper sticker, not a state-issued license plate.
Of the 247 rejected plates, only 13 have appealed, and again, no one has won their appeal.
The next step is to sue in Superior Court. So far, no one has done that.
Will Pete sue? Nope. He's done with vanity plates and will wait for a boring random chickadee plate.
When chatting with Pete about the license plate debacle, he just wants people to stop eating animals. The good news is that with the national attention his license plate caused, he got the word out.
