One of Maine's most recognizable symbols is proudly receiving internationally positive press.

Portland Head Light, Maine's most popular lighthouse, has been named the most iconic in the entire world. This incredible distinction was given to the Cape Elizabeth lighthouse by the travel magazine Touropia.

Portland Head Light was a part of a list of 10 lighthouses from around the world to receive the "most iconic" title. What's even better was the fact that Portland Head Light was ranked as number one on that impressive list. The best in the entire world, folks. It always feels good to be at the top.

Here is a little of what Touropia had to say about Maine's favorite lighthouse.

The historic lighthouse is set on a craggy clifftop in Cape Elizabeth, just to the south of the busy Portland Harbor. Reaching almost 25 meters in height, its white conical tower stands out delightfully against the desolate and rugged coastline that lies around it.

It's not surprising to see Portland Head Light get this kind of recognition. It's easily one of the most recognizable structures in not just Maine, but New England. Plus, it's absolutely stunning with a pristine landscape.

It's also claimed that Portland Head Light is one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. This makes sense, considering how popular Fort Williams Park, the home of Portland Head, truly is. Plus, the number of Mainers and tourists who shoot it from the water has to be rather mega. And I haven't even mentioned the number of local and national commercials and video productions featuring the famous light.

Portland Head Light is joined by some other incredibly iconic lighthouses on this "best of" list, including Makapu'u Point Lighthouse in Hawaii, Heceta Head Lighthouse in Oregon, Tower of Hercules in Spain, and Lindesnes Lighthouse in Norway. The entire list is impressive. There's certainly many on there I would love to go and visit if there's ever the opportunity.

As for Portland Head Light, you can find out more information here about the structure and museum, which can be found in the original lighthouse keeper's home. Happy lighthouse hunting.
